Design
At first glance, the iPhone 15 Pro Max may seem reminiscent of its predecessors, with a familiar three-lens camera system reminiscent of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. However, upon closer inspection, the differences become apparent.
One notable improvement is the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s lighter build compared to its predecessors, thanks to the switch to titanium from stainless steel. This change not only reduces weight but also enhances the overall feel of the device. While the brushed band along the sides adds a touch of distinction, the “Natural Titanium” finish on the back differs from Apple’s promotional images, though it’s a detail often concealed by protective cases.
Another significant enhancement is the transition from sharp edges to smooth, contoured ones, addressing the discomfort often associated with holding previous iPhone models. This refinement maintains the iconic aesthetic while prioritizing user comfort—a long-awaited improvement.
Furthermore, the reduction in screen bezels brings the iPhone 15 Pro Max closer to the “all-screen design” promised by Apple, aligning more closely with competitors like Pixel and Samsung Galaxy flagships.
While the design remains largely consistent with previous iPhone Pros, notable changes include the adoption of a USB-C port in place of the Lightning port and the addition of a new Action button. The antenna gaps, while retaining their aesthetic appeal, serve a functional purpose, though the sizable camera system still causes the device to wobble when placed on a flat surface.
In essence, the iPhone 15 Pro Max retains the essence of its predecessors’ design, with subtle yet impactful enhancements that elevate the user experience. If you appreciated the previous design, this iteration offers even more to love.
Apple 2024 MacBook LaptopCameras and video
Cameras are always a huge deal on the iPhone, and the 15 Pro Max is no different. Essentially, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max both have the same cameras, but the 15 Pro has a 3x telephoto lens and the 15 Pro Max a 5x telephoto lens. It makes me wonder what an iPhone 15 Pro Ultra would have been like with both the 3x and the 5x — think Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Photos from the 15 Pro Max are great and on par with those from the S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 Pro, especially with that 5x lens! Take a look at the gallery below featuring snaps I took with the phone.
Action Button
The iPhone 15 Pro introduces a unique hardware feature that goes beyond conventional upgrades. The Action button, highlighted by Apple during its keynote, promises significant photography applications. However, its practicality falls short in certain aspects. While quick to access, its placement on the iPhone 15 Pro Max proves less ergonomic for seamless operation
In the Camera app, the Action button doubles as a shutter button, though its functionality mirrors that of the volume buttons. Lacking half-press capabilities for focus and burst mode functionality, its utility feels limited. However, innovative users have found ways to enhance its versatility through shortcuts.
By leveraging shortcuts, users can customize the Action button’s functionality, offering personalized control over essential features. Halide, for instance, has integrated the Action button to switch lenses, modes, and more within the app, expanding its usability beyond standard operations.
This inventive approach highlights the potential of dedicated hardware buttons on smartphones, especially for photography enthusiasts. The tactile nature of physical controls enhances user experience, making the camera feel like a seamless extension of oneself.
As Apple continues to iterate on the Action button and its capabilities, there’s excitement for the future of this tiny yet impactful hardware addition. With further enhancements and innovations, the Action button has the potential to revolutionize smartphone photography, empowering users with greater
flexibility and control.
